How Yoga and Astrology Work Together for Self-Understanding
When people learn that I'm both a Kundalini yoga teacher and a Western astrologer, they sometimes look puzzled. Yoga and astrology can seem like two completely different worlds. But in my experience, they're two halves of the same whole — and together, they offer something that neither can provide alone.
Astrology as a map
Think of your natal chart as a detailed map of your inner landscape. It shows your innate tendencies — how you process emotions, what motivates you, where you tend to get stuck, what your natural strengths are, and what patterns you're likely to repeat.
For example, your chart might reveal that you have a strong Mars influence, making you naturally action-oriented but prone to frustration when things don't move fast enough. Or it might show a prominent Moon-Saturn connection, suggesting deep emotional sensitivity paired with a tendency to suppress feelings.
This kind of self-knowledge is incredibly valuable. But knowledge alone doesn't create change. You can understand intellectually that you tend to suppress anger, but that understanding doesn't release the anger from your body. This is where yoga comes in.
Yoga as the energy for change
Kundalini yoga works directly with your energy, nervous system, and emotional body through specific techniques — kriyas, breathwork, meditation, and mantra. Each kriya is designed to produce a specific effect: releasing anger, opening the heart, building courage, calming anxiety, strengthening intuition.
When you combine the insight from astrology with the tools of Kundalini yoga, something powerful happens. Instead of doing a generic yoga class, you can practice specifically what your chart — and your life — is asking you to work on.
How I combine them in practice
In my natal chart readings, I don't just describe what I see in your chart. I connect it to practical steps you can take. If your chart shows:
- ✦Suppressed anger → I might recommend a Kundalini kriya specifically designed for releasing anger, like Sat Kriya or the set for the liver
- ✦Anxiety or overthinking → specific breathwork techniques like left nostril breathing or a meditation for calming the mind
- ✦Difficulty with self-expression → throat chakra kriyas and mantra practice
- ✦Emotional overwhelm → heart center work and grounding exercises
- ✦Lack of clarity about life direction → third eye meditations and intuition-building practices
The astrology reading becomes a starting point — not just information, but a personalized prescription for your yoga practice.
You don't need both — but they amplify each other
You can absolutely benefit from Kundalini yoga without knowing your natal chart, and you can get a lot from a chart reading without doing yoga. They're independent practices that work well on their own.
But when you bring them together, there's a clarity that's hard to achieve otherwise. Astrology shows you the "what" — what patterns you're working with, what your soul came here to learn. Yoga gives you the "how" — the actual tools and practices to shift those patterns, release what's stuck, and step more fully into who you are.
If you're curious about this combination, you can start with either one — a yoga class to experience the practice, or a natal chart reading to understand your inner landscape. Both doors lead to the same place: a deeper understanding of yourself.
